- Clement West who had never been in Nebraska came to persuade John Ashley to invest his savings in a Pieced Tinware Factory in Ohio, Licking County. This interested John Ashley as Clement West would look after the country peddlers for this product. He went to Ohio and bought this factory. In this venture he became a very successful business man. This Pieced Tinware Factory became the foundation of the fortune he had accumulated when he died in Johnstown, Ohio sometime in 1926 or 27.
Find a Grave has him buried in Bigelow Cemetery, Johnstown, OH, but Mary Catherine (Violett) Corbett states that he was buried in Croton, OH.
While on a visit to Croton Ohio in 1936 I went to this cemetery with the Hoover descendants and saw the three little white marble stones so beautifully carved with Violetts on the tops and a marvelous slab on the mother's grave just as my father had described it all to me. These had been erected in 1858 and the carving was a design given to the marble cutter by Justice. At the end of the long line of Hoover graves was a beautifully designed stone in memory of John Ashley, the seventh son, the only son of Justice and Melissa to be buried with the Mother.
