  • Notes
    • DOB: His sister Mary Catherine Corbett, but Find a Grave has 21 Jul 1844.

The government to evry soldier of the Union Forces a homestead right to eighty acres instead of forty acres allowed to any citizen. This suited Seth Horton and he and Louis Benton went in early 1866 to Nebraska.
He was not yet 16 years of age when he enlisted in Killpatrick's Cavalry, 10th Ohio Regiment and rode very happily into the service on the very best horse on the farm. Young Sampson, as his Grandmother Eve Hoover (Philips) Violett. called him, enjoyed his Army life, became a scout for his company was a wonderful horseman, an expert swordsman, and enjoyed being called the "Pistol Shot"' in his division commanded by Black Jack Logan.
